- How does it make you feel that Barnard did not have its own CS program until January 2019? Did this surprise or upset you?
- At present, this question conditions respondents to answer that they were surprised or upset
- I suggest excising the highlighted text so that students have the capacity to answer based on their feelings without this additional conditioning
Additionally, it would be helpful to reframe/add questions that talk about student knowledge of — and experience with — some of the things we've already done in CS:
- The question "Do you wish that Barnard offered smaller, intro level courses, specifically targeted at first and second years without much CS experience?” should be revised, because about half of the classes we have developed fit into precisely this category (you can see the details of our courses at https://cs.barnard.edu/academic-year-2020-21-course-offerings), with over 80 students who took such classes so far this year, plus a Summer A class whose enrollments we don’t yet know. To have this question produce more useful information, I’d suggest revising, perhaps to multiple questions. For example, it would be useful for us to know if students are aware of these classes, now that we have worked hard to create them. Here are some suggestions for multiple questions in place of that question:
- Are you aware that Barnard offers small, intro-level courses in Computer Science, specifically targeted at First-Years and Sophomores without much CS experience?
- Have you taken any of Barnard’s Computer Science classes and/or the first-year seminar Tech & Society? If so, how did you find that experience?
- What additional classes or kinds of classes would you like to see offered by Barnard Computer Science?
