HISTORY OF STEM DAY
- Early 2000s studies showed that U.S students were not excelling in STEM subjects to the same extent that students were in other countries
- History is backed in a pretty capitalist perspective; U.S would not be able to adequately compete in the global economy because of a poorly educated (STEM) workforce
- A study in 2006 showed that U.S underperformed in a variety of STEM subjects and that the U.S overall ranked towards the bottom on scientific competency + knowledge assessments
- “Our knowledge-based economy is driven by constant innovation. The foundation of innovation lies in a dynamic, motivated and well-educated workforce equipped with STEM skills.” - STEM Education Caucus
- ECONOMY relies on INNOVATION which relies on a workforce well-equipped in STEM
- Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation found that many U.S educators were unaware of STEM implications
- Educators lacked in-depth knowledge of STEM careers, and were therefore not prepared to guide students to explore those fields
- Findings from different studies on educational practices encouraged U.S state governors to find methods to lead their states with the goal of graduating every high school student with essential STEM competency + knowledge
- Innovation happens where STEM happens. Innovation is what keeps our society evolving. We cannot build a more inclusive and progressive America without building an inclusive and progressive STEM community. So to every young woman, person of color, and any individual who's ever felt as though you don't belong in STEM, I promise you that this community (& the whole dang world for that matter!) cannot flourish without you and your ideas.
