BRIEF HISTORY OF BARNARD
Barnard was founded in 1889 by a woman named Annie Nathan Meyer
Annie was not satisfied that Columbia across the street only admitted men
She rallied a group of her peers to petition the University Trustees for a new liberal arts college to be created that was specifically for women* and that was affiliated with Columbia
Annie and her friends succeeded, and thus Barnard was born and named after the 10th president of Columbia University, Frederick A.P Barnard
A year after being founded, (1890), Barnard was officially included in the educational system of Columbia University
Barnard has been around for over 130 years and has maintained its position as the most sought-after women’s college in the nation
Barnard has some pretty awesome stuff going on where you get to have the best of both worlds: a small, liberal arts, college experience & a big, research university (across the street!)
