Hi there! My name is Izzy and I’m a student at Barnard College. I work for a paid professional development program for teachers called STEAM in the City and I would love to invite teachers from SCHOOL to participate in our upcoming cohort!
Do you think that you can connect me with the best person to speak to about this?
Can I tell you a little bit about the program or send you an email with more information?
Awesome! So STEAM in the City is hosted by the Barnard College Office of Community Engagement and Inclusion. It connects local teachers with resources, pedagogical training, and practices for implementing local STEAM-focused learning opportunities all with assistance of Barnard scholars. ****All teachers who join the program receive compensation for participating and we’d love to have teachers from your school join us in this next cohort. Can I send you an email with more information?
All teachers who join the program receive compensation for participating, a $5000 budget for purchasing supplies for any STEAM projects of their choice, staffing support from Barnard students specializing in various STEAM fields, along with many other perks. The whole program is really centered around working with local teachers to create STEAM learning experiences for their students that are born out of local surroundings, such as neighborhood parks. It is a really dope opportunity and we’re trying to make it known and accessible to as many teachers in the area as possible. All of this information is available on our website and in a promotional flyer that I can easily send right over. But before I do that, does this seem like something teachers would be interested in at your school or do you have any questions?
Great, thanks so much!

What is the commitment for teachers?
This cohort will last from July 2022 through June 2023. Teachers begin with a Summer Institute, which is a 5-day experience from July 11th to July 15th. So there’s the mandatory Summer Institute and then throughout the year there’s ongoing strongly encouraged professional development workshops for the teachers. We’ve done some pretty cool workshops in the past on topics such as urban bee keeping, local ecology, technology, local architecture, engineering design, etc and teachers have seemed to really gotten a lot of them and loved them.
How many teachers do you want from our school?
Anyone is welcome to apply! We’ll have a final group of somewhere between 20 to 25 teachers from across several schools in the neighborhood.
How much money do teachers make from participating?
Teachers make $1250 from attending the Institute, which they also receive free meals at. Then throughout the year, there are professional development workshops for teachers (normally held on DOE holidays) and teachers make $150 per workshop. And as said previously, every teacher receives a $5000 budget for purchasing supplies for any STEAM projects and/or for creating makerspaces in their classrooms.
Is the program interactive?
Yes! That’s a very core value of ours.
Is the program just for math and science teachers?
We are primarily targeting math and science teachers, but any educator who teaches STEAM-related course material to their students is encouraged to apply.
I’d love to follow up with you about teachers at your school participating in STEAM in the City. I can send you an email with more information on the program and next steps for teachers to take in order to participate. I can also arrange a virtual or in-person info session where the coordinator of STEAM in the City and I can speak to you and prospective participating teachers about the program. Would you like me to send more information over email, arrange an info session over email, or both?
Great! Can you spell your name for me? And what is your email?
